To lower your Turnitin similarity score honestly, fix the passages behind your largest matches: add quotation marks and citations to exact wording, rewrite close paraphrases in your own words and cite them, reduce reliance on any single source, and check your reference list format. Then re-check before submitting.

There is a lot of bad advice online about beating Turnitin: swapping letters, using paraphrasing tools or hiding text. These tricks are detectable, they can be treated as misconduct and they make your writing worse. This guide is about the opposite approach: making your work properly yours so the score falls naturally.

Can you lower your similarity score honestly?

Yes. Most high scores come from a few fixable habits: missing quotation marks, close paraphrasing, leaning heavily on one source and long quotes. Fixing those improves both the score and the quality of your work. Tricks designed to fool the software do neither.

Before you start, make sure the score really needs lowering. References and quoted material may be inflating it. Read why your Turnitin score is high first.

How do you fix missing or weak citations?

Go through each highlighted passage and ask: did I use this source’s exact words or close wording? If yes, either put the words in quotation marks with a citation, or rewrite the idea fully in your own words and still cite it. Every borrowed idea needs a citation, even when paraphrased.

  • Use one consistent referencing style (Harvard, APA, MLA, OSCOLA) throughout.
  • Cite at the point of use, not just in the reference list.
  • For page-specific quotes, include page numbers where your style requires them.

How should you paraphrase sources properly?

Read the passage, close the source, write the idea from memory in your own structure and words, then compare and cite. Changing a few words while keeping the original sentence structure is patchwriting, which still matches and can count as plagiarism.

Our full guide with examples is here: how to paraphrase without plagiarising. A useful test: if you cannot explain the idea without looking at the source, you are not ready to paraphrase it yet.

When should you quote instead of paraphrase?

Quote when the exact wording matters: a definition, a striking phrase, a legal provision or a claim you are going to analyse closely. Keep quotes short and introduce them with your own words. Paraphrase everything else, so most of the essay is in your voice.

If your tutor excludes quotes from the score, correctly marked quotations will not count at all. Read Does Turnitin check references and quotes?.

How do you cut over-reliance on one source?

If one source accounts for a large share of your score, you are probably summarising it rather than using it. Bring in other sources that support or challenge the same point, compare them, and add your own evaluation. That spreads matches thinly and strengthens your argument.

Long continuous highlighted passageQuote a short part, paraphrase the rest, cite both

What tricks should you avoid?

Avoid character swapping, hidden white text, images of text, spinning tools and AI paraphrasers. Turnitin and tutors look for these, many are treated as deliberate deception, and AI rewriting can raise your AI writing score even if similarity falls.

Turnitin added detection of AI paraphrasing and bypasser tools, so rewording tools can swap a similarity problem for an AI problem. The honest fixes above are also the fastest.

Should you re-check before final submission?

Yes, if you made significant changes. A re-check confirms the fixes worked and catches anything new. Use a check that does not store your paper in Turnitin’s repository, so your final submission will not match your own check.

How should you structure paragraphs to reduce matches?

Lead each paragraph with your own point, use sources as evidence for it, then finish with your own analysis. When sources support your argument rather than form it, less of the paragraph matches other texts and the writing reads as yours.

A simple pattern works well: point, evidence, explanation, link. The point and explanation are your words. The evidence is a short quote or cited paraphrase. Paragraphs built this way rarely produce long continuous matches.

Compare this with a paragraph that opens with a summary of one author, continues with a summary of a second author and ends with a quote. That structure creates high similarity and little argument.

How long does it take to bring a score down?

It depends on the cause. Fixing a counted reference list or adding missing quotation marks can take minutes. Rewriting sections that lean on one source can take a few hours. Leave at least a day before your deadline so you can revise properly and re-check.

CauseTypical time to fix (estimate)
Missing quotation marksUnder 30 minutes
Reference list formattingUnder 30 minutes
Close paraphrasing in a few paragraphs1 to 2 hours
A section built on one source2 to 4 hours
Whole essay over-reliant on sourcesA day or more

If you are short of time, prioritise the largest matches first. They usually account for most of the score.

What does a well-revised report look like?

After honest revision, the report usually shows no single source above a few percent, highlighted passages mostly inside quotation marks or in the reference list, and the rest as short common phrases. The overall number may still not be tiny, but every match can be explained.

Before revisionAfter revision
One source at 9%Largest source at 2%
Long unquoted passagesShort quotes with citations
Summary-heavy paragraphsYour argument supported by sources
References inflating scoreStandard heading, filter-ready

That is the report you want your tutor to see. Check your revised version through a pre-submission check if you made major changes.

Frequently asked questions

How can I reduce my Turnitin score quickly?

Start with the largest single source in your report. Quote and cite exact wording, rewrite close paraphrases and check your reference list. Those steps usually make the biggest difference.

Do paraphrasing tools lower Turnitin scores?

They may reduce exact matches, but Turnitin detects AI paraphrasing, and uncited rewording is still plagiarism. They often create new problems.

Does adding citations lower my score?

Citations do not remove matched text by themselves, but correctly quoted material is excluded when the quote filter is on, and cited paraphrasing is not plagiarism even when it matches.

What is patchwriting?

Copying a source’s sentence structure while swapping some words. It still matches in Turnitin and can count as plagiarism.

Should I check my work again after editing?

Yes, if you changed a lot. Use a no-repository check so your final submission does not match your own check.
