Can Turnitin Detect ChatGPT?An Honest Answer for 2026

Yes, Turnitin can often detect ChatGPT, but not every time. Its AI writing indicator estimates how much of your prose was likely generated by an AI model such as ChatGPT. Turnitin lists recent GPT models in its detection coverage, but the score is a probability, and it can miss AI text as well as occasionally flag human writing.

ChatGPT is the tool students ask about most, so this is the question we get most often. The short answer above is accurate. The longer answer depends on how the text was produced, how long the document is, whether it was edited and whether your university even uses the AI feature. This guide covers all of it.

For the full mechanics behind the score, read Turnitin AI detection explained.

Can Turnitin detect ChatGPT?

Turnitin’s AI writing FAQs list GPT models from GPT-4o through recent GPT-5 versions among those its detector covers. Unedited ChatGPT text in a long essay is the case it is designed for. Turnitin does not publish detection rates per model, so no one outside Turnitin can say exactly how often it catches ChatGPT.

There is also a licensing point. AI detection is only available to institutions that license Turnitin Originality or the iThenticate AI add-on, and some universities have switched it off. If your university does not use it, your work receives no AI score at all.

How does Turnitin spot ChatGPT text?

Turnitin splits your prose into overlapping segments, scores each for how likely it is to be AI-generated, combines those into sentence predictions and produces one percentage. It is a trained deep learning model, so it looks for patterns typical of AI writing rather than matching your text against ChatGPT’s outputs.

This is why Turnitin’s AI score is different from its similarity score. Similarity compares your text with a database. The AI score uses no database. Turnitin states the two are completely independent.

What changed in 2025 and 2026?

Turnitin added detection of AI bypasser or humaniser tools on 27 August 2025, updated its AI model in February and May 2026, and on 4 August 2026 merged AI-paraphrased text into one AI category. ChatGPT text run through a paraphraser or humaniser is now included in the single AI percentage.

DateUpdate
July 2024Asterisk shown for scores between 1% and 19%
27 August 2025Bypasser (humaniser) detection added
February 2026AI detection model updated
4 August 2026One AI category; purple paraphrase highlight removed

How accurate is Turnitin at catching ChatGPT?

Turnitin claims under 1% false positives on documents scored above 20% AI. Independent results vary: a 2023 study found Turnitin classified ChatGPT and human essays correctly, while a June 2026 peer-reviewed study found it scored 0% on fully AI-generated long papers produced with ChatGPT Deep Research in May 2025.

Turnitin has updated its model several times since that study’s text was generated, so results today may differ. The fair summary is that Turnitin is tuned to avoid accusing innocent students, and it accepts missing some AI text as the cost.

What does your AI score mean?

0% means no AI detected. An asterisk means some AI was detected between 1% and 19%, but Turnitin withheld the number as unreliable. A blue percentage of 20% or more is an estimate of the share of qualifying prose likely written or altered by AI. It is not proof on its own.

Does editing ChatGPT text stop Turnitin detecting it?

Light edits rarely change much, because the structure and patterns of the AI text remain. Heavy rewriting in your own words changes the text substantially, but if the ideas and arguments still come from ChatGPT, using it may breach your university’s AI policy regardless of the score.

The question to ask is not whether Turnitin will notice, but whether your module allows the use. If it does, disclose it and keep your drafts. If it does not, the score is the least of the risks.

What if Turnitin flags your own writing as ChatGPT?

Stay calm and gather your process evidence: version history, drafts, notes and outlines. Ask for the exact score and whether it was above 20%. Turnitin states its AI percentage should not be the sole basis for action, so your evidence and explanation matter.

How should you use ChatGPT safely for coursework?

Follow your module’s AI policy first. Where use is allowed, keep it to the permitted tasks, write the assessed text yourself, disclose the tool as required and save your prompts and drafts. Then check your final version before submitting so any highlighted passages can be explained.

  • Read the AI section of your module handbook.
  • Ask your tutor in writing if the policy is unclear.
  • Keep a short log of prompts and how you used the output.
  • Never paste AI text into your submission as your own writing where it is not allowed.

Frequently asked questions

Can Turnitin detect ChatGPT in 2026?

Often, yes. Turnitin lists recent GPT models in its detection coverage, but the result is a probability and it can miss AI text, particularly in some long documents.

Can Turnitin detect ChatGPT if I paraphrase it?

Turnitin detects AI text altered by paraphrasers and bypasser tools, and since August 2026 includes it in one AI percentage. Detection is not guaranteed.

Can students see if Turnitin detected ChatGPT?

Not in the standard submission flow. Turnitin says the AI indicator is not visible to students, though a tutor can share the report.

Does Turnitin compare my essay with ChatGPT conversations?

No. Turnitin’s AI score is a prediction from a trained model. It does not have access to your ChatGPT history.

Is using ChatGPT for an essay plagiarism?

It depends on your university’s policy. Many treat undisclosed AI-generated text as academic misconduct even if it is not copied from a source.
